Past Intern Reflections
My name is Dexter Waters and I just started my second and final year of the Master of Science in Public Health in Health Policy at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Over the summer, I interned with the Global Access in Action project. I was drawn to GAiA by its unique approach to addressing the global access to medicines problem - bringing together stakeholders across sectors to change how pharmaceutical companies price their medicines and how they decide which medicines to develop.
Throughout this internship, I gained research skills exploring how industry evaluates their access to medicines programs, developed my policy writing skills, and broadened my knowledge of legal mechanisms to increase access to existing therapies while encouraging medical innovation for diseases that disproportionately affect the world’s poor. Working with the legal and policy experts on the GAiA team also helped refine my interests and career path. I now work on a research team at the Center for Medical Technology Policy, where we work to improve the quality, relevance, and efficiency of clinical research. I hope to continue to work in the areas of drug development and pricing, and to make policy changes that will provide people around the world with access to lifesaving drugs, biologics, and devices.
